Last tunnel cut through on subway route IV. C2

Released: 2. 11. 2005

On Wednesday, November 2, Metrostav workers cut through the last rock of the ultimate section of the tunnel remaining to connect Ládví and Letňany on the IV. C2 route of the Prague subway system. The over-all length of the section cut by driving along this tunnel route is 1350 m, of which 1285 m were driven to the profile of a two-track tunnel.
Tunnel driving work between the Prosek and Letňany stops was launched on November 11, 2004 and progresses in two directions from the Klíčov access shaft – towards Letňany and towards Prosek.
The final stages of work involved relatively shallow locations under the housing developments situated in this part of Prosek. At some points the tunnel roof is no more than just 10 meters under the surface. It was precisely this driving work, which also required a special procedure to be adopted in subdividing the excavation area; thanks to this technique the subsidence on the surface above was never more than 2 cm.
Driving cut through glaucolithic sandstones, shale, and clayey rock. There was no possibility of using blasting work in the areas under the Klíčov and Prosek housing developments, so that the rock formations had to be loosened using solely the tunneling excavator.
Metrostav tunnel drivers' gang was advancing approx. 2.9 m per day, except in complicated areas with housing right atop the tunnel where a subdivided cavity was being produced, slowing down the rate of advance to no more than 0.75 m a day.
The work yet to be completed at the tunnels includes laying concrete to produce the final lining, whereupon the rail tracks and cabling will be laid.

Realizing that all this subway construction work amounts to quite a burden for the local residents, Metrostav has made it possible for them to view and visit the underground sites several times so as to acquaint themselves with the progress of work. The last encounter with the residents under whose homes the driving was taking place will be held one week after the last rock was cut, that is on November 9, 2005.

The IV. C2 subway section of more than four and a half kilometers in length connects to the IV. C1 route put into operation last year just behind the Ládví stop, and will link the Prague housing developments of Ďáblice, Prosek, and Letňany. Passengers will be able to board the trains at three stations (two at Prosek, one in v Letňany), which all of them were constructed as sunk type stations.

Thanks to completion of the IV. C2 section the residential zone along the North terrace of the capital will be able to benefit from full transportation services, and the issue of accessibility of the Letňany Fairgrounds will also be successfully resolved. This terminal will also be the terminal station for municipal and suburban bus transport, and high-capacity P+R type (park and ride) parking lots will be built there.
Trains should run on the new subway section as of mid-2008.

The IV. C2 subway route is being built by a consortium of Metrostav Corp., Skanska CZ Corp., and Subterra Corp. Metrostav Corporation is the leading partner of the consortium.
