“Seifertova” Railway Bridges Again in Service
Released: 12. 11. 2002
On Tuesday, November 12, 2002, traffic on Seifertova railway bridges (under-bridges) has been reopened, which were reconstructed within the frame of the first stage of the project “ČD DDC, Modernization of West Section of Prague Main Station”. This project solves not only these bridges over Seifertova Street near the “U Bulhara” crossing, but also alteration of this street in the section from Italská Street to “U Bulhara” crossing. During implementation of the first stage of construction works, the steel bridges forming the “lower half” of the entire bridging structure were substituted by new reinforced concrete structures. With regard to the change in direction and height arrangement of rails on the bridge, it was needed to dismantle track spans and track leads in a wider area around the bridge. In practice, it required to build 4 new and rebuild 17 existing switches, remove and re-lay approximately 2.5 km of tracks, and built new contact lines (trolley system). In addition, certain (underground) services in Husitská and Seifertova Streets were refurbished.
In the second stage, the “upper half” of the bridge shall be completed, the tram track in Seifertova Street shall be re-laid, and other accompanying building structures shall be carried out, e.g. sewerage, gas, and water mains, as well as optical fiber cable systems and other networks. After completion, this structure shall enable to reach higher speeds of trains up to 50 (fifty) km per hour compared to previous 10 (ten) km per hour. The extended carriageway in Seifertova Street, and higher clearance limit of the bridge shall improve the traffic situation in this part of Prague.
The new bridge being built of reinforced concrete structure with 36 beams succeeded, on October 30, 2002, in loading tests. It is designed so that it shall fully satisfy not only the current traffic pattern, but it shall also meet requirements, after completion of both stages, of inclusion into the so-called “New Connection”. This term was given to the project, which solves a speedy flyover interconnection of the first railway corridor with the Prague main railway station terminal. The bridge is therefore designed for all possible purposes, since it is envisaged that the main station gridiron shall be changed in this section in future.
The CZK 259.9 million project’s promoter is České dráhy (Czech Railways), Divize dopravní cesty (Traffic Route Division). Plans were prepared by SUDOP Praha. Construction works were and are supplied by “Sdružení mosty Seifertova Praha – 1. část (Consortium for Seifertova Bridges Prague – 1st Section)”. The Consortium’s leader is Metrostav and member is Železniční stavitelství Praha a.s. (Railroad Constructions Prague J.S.C.), which carried out, inter alia, works on railway superstructure and diversions of services and utilities. The main subcontractor is Stavby silnic a železnic (Road & Railway Constructions). Project’s communication and interlocking plant is supplied by AŽD Praha, contact lines by EŽ Praha, and many other companies are participating in the project as well.
Bridge Structural Design
The bridge is a steel-concrete structure with a clearance of 28 m and midspan depth of 0.90 m. The load-bearing structure embeds into two continuous walls. The face wall is a compression member and the back wall is a tension member. Both walls are founded on large-diameter piles with a length of 20 m approximately. The original diagonal rods were substituted by embedment of cantilevers into the sloped back wall of abutment.
Heights and layouts of the new bridge are corresponding with a current temporary situation as well as the definitive configuration of tracks after comprehensive modernization of the west section of the main railway station Prague in coordination with the “New Connection” Project.
