After 500 Days and Four Kilometers of Tunneling, the Viktoria TBM Sees the Light of the World Again

Pilsen – Doubravka, June 7, 2016 – A bore-through ceremony, during which the Viktoria tunnel boring machine made its way through a portal located in close proximity to Pilsen’s borough of Doubravka, has marked the completion of the southern tube of the Ejpovice Tunnel. The event was attended by officials representing the Railway Infrastructure Administration, State Fund for Transport Infrastructure, the contractors – Metrostav and Subterra, other organizations that took part in the construction process, and guests. Following more than a year and a half of underground work, Viktoria will now see the light of the world for a short time.
“The Ejpovice Tunnel is a key structure on the Rokycany-Pilsen railway line, which belongs to the trans-European core transport network and to the domestic Third Railway Transit Corridor, which connects Prague with Pilsen and Cheb, and from there leads as far as the Czech border with Germany. The tunnel will shorten the length of the railway in this section by more than six kilometers,” said Managing Director of the Railway Infrastructure Administration Pavel Surý. Once the entire line has been upgraded, traveling from the Czech capital to Pilsen will take less than an hour. Currently, a train journey between the two cities takes one hour and 35 minutes.
The Viktoria TBM is the younger sister of Tonda and Adéla, two tunneling machines that bored the extension of the A Line of the Prague subway. Manufactured by Herrenknecht in Schwanau, Germany, Victoria weighs some 1,800 tons, is 115 meters in length, and features a cutter head with a diameter of nearly 10 meters. The heaviest parts of the machine were transported to the Czech Republic in an environment-friendly manner by ship. The tunnel boring technology (TBM) deployed in Ejpovice is one of the most modern tunnel construction methods. Its principal advantages include speed and safety. TBMs are currently used to bore approximately 80% of all tunnels worldwide.
“We are happy to have reached the destination despite some difficulties caused by unexpected geological conditions in the ground beneath the Homolka and Chlum hills, where we encountered hard spilite rock and abnormal amounts of inflowing water. Viktoria will now be partly disassembled, refurbished, and brought back to Kyšice, where the boring of the second tube of the tunnel will begin in the fall,” explained Metrostav’s Production and Technology Director Ivan Hrdina.
Viktoria is a convertible tunneling machine, which means that it can function in several modes that allow it to bore through both soft soil and solid rock. The maximum daily progress achieved during the boring of the Ejpovice Tunnel was 32 meters. The machine creates a completely finished tunnel with walls built from concrete rings composed of seven-plus-one segments. Each ring is two meters wide and 0.4 meter thick. The rings were manufactured in Dýšina, approximately two kilometers from the construction site. More than two thousand rings are needed for each of the tubes of the tunnel.
