Reconstruction of Hněvkovice Hydraulic Structure
The reconstruction of Hněvkovice hydraulic structure ensured it could cope with any flooding, even the worst flood in 10,000 years. Compared to the original state – around 1,750 m3/s – it is now able to safely handle a flow of up to 2,600 m3/s.
Basic information
Project Investor:
Povodí Vltavy s.p.
Project Designer:
AQUATIS, a.s.
Project Duration:
04/2020 – 12/2022

Characteristics
The spillway edges of two of the three safety spillways were lowered by 1.5 metres and their segmented closing elements were replaced. In order to be able to transfer flood flows, the lock was also modified – it was deepened, the upper gate was enlarged and the lower gate was replaced, including the control and management system.
Project in numbers
- 19 mMaximum lock draught
- 34 tonnesWeight of the upper gate
- 70 tonnesWeight of the lower gate
Uniqueness of construction project
The structure for the protective sumps in front of the lock and the two segments of the dam were built from a boat. During the welding, specialised welders worked at depths of up to 17 m below the water surface with the constant attendance of divers. In these waters, visibility is normally only up to 30 centimetres.
